STEVE SHIELDS GETS A LITTLE CHEESIE
Date: March 9, 2004
Steve Shields’ stitch mask was inspired by Hall of Famer Gerry “Cheesie” Cheevers’ similar design, regarded by many as the greatest mask in NHL history. In the late 1960s, Cheesie started wearing a mask with drawn-on stitches after he was hit in the face by a puck during practice. Before him, goalies wore plain white masks. His added details changed that forever. Cheesie inspired countless young hockey players with his skill and his personality and Shields found the perfect way to say thanks.
