SCOTT MELLANBY’S BATTERED HELMET, 1995-1996

Scott Mellanby put this helmet through the wringer. Note the tape over the right temple and above the right brow to hold padding in place. Rotate to see where something left a mark on the back of the helmet. Helmets were not mandatory in the NHL until 1979 and even then, players already in the league could opt not to wear one. The last player to not wear a helmet, Craig MacTavish, was a teammate of Mellanby’s in Edmonton.
